Commonwealth Contractors Supports Historic Preservation Through Charlottesville Lecture Series
Building a Legacy of Preservation
Commonwealth Contractors has long been committed to serving the Charlottesville and Albemarle County community through quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Beyond construction, the company invests in preserving the region’s heritage. One of the most meaningful ways this happens is through its role in co-founding and sponsoring an ongoing lecture series on historic preservation in partnership with the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society (ACHS) and Preservation Piedmont.
Leadership and Sponsorship
Luke Roark, President of Commonwealth Contractors, not only leads the company but also serves as Treasurer on the Board of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. His vision helped launch the lecture series, which highlights significant stories, places, and people that shaped Central Virginia. Commonwealth Contractors continues to sponsor each event, making it possible for the lectures to remain free and accessible to the public.

Through its programs, archives, and events, ACHS works to connect the community with its past while fostering dialogue about how history shapes the present and future. - Preservation Piedmont
Preservation Piedmont is a nonprofit organization committed to the protection of historic sites, structures, and landscapes throughout the Piedmont region of Virginia. With education, advocacy, and preservation initiatives at its core, the group provides resources and guidance to help communities maintain their architectural and cultural heritage.
Together with Commonwealth Contractors, these partners provide the expertise, funding, and community outreach that make the lecture series a cornerstone of preservation education in Charlottesville.
Spotlight: The Brown’s Cove Lecture
The first lecture in the series, “Brown’s Cove Unveiled: Highlights from the Albemarle Historical Society’s Landmark Lecture”, explored the rich history of Brown’s Cove, a community shaped by Native American presence, colonial settlement, and generations of families whose stories are woven into Albemarle’s fabric.
The lecture featured:
- Original Research: Dr. Jay Jacob Calhoun shared insights from 14 months of research, including interactive maps, genealogies, and story maps.
- Layered Themes: Topics ranged from enslavement and agriculture to craftsmanship, women’s roles, and Civil War history.
- Digital Storytelling: The project uses ArcGIS mapping to bring land ownership and community change to life.
- Community Engagement: Audience discussions expanded the conversation to subjects such as Shenandoah National Park, the role of rivers, and preservation of memory.

Why It Matters
By supporting this lecture series, Commonwealth Contractors helps ensure that local history isn’t just preserved in books and archives, it’s actively discussed, shared, and passed down. For homeowners, renovators, and builders, these stories inspire approaches to construction that respect the past while building for the future.
